Modern Day Unicorns – Work-Life Balance

A few months ago, I was headed out for a run on a cold and windy day, my husband told me to take a particular route claiming that I would have a headwind. My response to that was “headwinds are like unicorns. There are people who swear they exist, but I’ve never seen one.” It’s the same with the elusive work-life balance. Everyone says you need it, few have obtained it, and most believe that it doesn’t exist to begin with.

I hear it at least daily, life is all about balance. Balance between work and home, husband and children, self and family, the list goes on and on. You’ve probably seen the meme on Facebook where the guy at the gym always skips “leg day” and eventually ends up with a completely disproportionate looking body, a pile of muscles sitting on top of chicken legs. That’s where you’ll end up if you don’t make balance in your life a priority. Some days will be a success, some months will feel like total failure, but that’s life. For me, it’s a constant battle, but also one that I ultimately must win.

The reason that finding balance is so important is that it can have a tangible and profound effect on your overall health and wellbeing. Between work obligations, juggling family schedules, and finding time for myself, I sometimes feel like my life is spinning out of control. Yet it’s maintaining balance, a little slice of the day that’s just for me, that gives me a place to refresh, reconnect, and reignite. Running is my reset button. I am not a great runner, I’m slower than I’d like to be, and it almost always hurts, but none of that matters. When I’m finished, I feel recharged and focused. I am better equipped to truly engage with those around me. It doesn’t have to be exercise, for you it might be crafting or gardening. Whatever it is, just find it, and don’t let it go. Initially it’ll feel like you’re being selfish, but in time, you’ll realize that it’s really about self-love. Carve out time in your day, every day, to focus on the things that bring harmony to your life. Turn off the technology, disconnect from work emails, the laundry will still be there tomorrow.
