Behind the Brand – Mundos Coffee

Written by Brooke Felger

Dan and Melissa Clark, two of the owners of Mundos Coffee in Traverse City (and now also in Suttons Bay), found each other in Tennessee- even though he was originally from Michigan, and she was from California. Dan, there for a job his dad had taken, had a friend named Jeremy who his father called “Jeremundo”. Little did he know that a few decades later, that nickname would be the inspiration for the name of his growing Traverse City business. The word mundo is also a Spanish word for “world”, and appropriately, Mundos Roasting Company and Coffee Shop sources product from all over the world.

Dan hasn’t always loved coffee. In fact, he originally didn’t like it at all. His love affair with coffee began with an exquisite pour-over from Morsels. He soon began roasting coffee in a popcorn maker, and then a proper coffee roaster in the garage. At the urging of friends and family, he decided to turn his hobby into a career, and Mundos on Boon street was born.

The Clarks have also been long-time servants of Traverse City as photographers (you may be familiar with Dan and Melissa Photography), but as of late, they are both focusing on Mundos and letting their eldest daughter, Sarah and her new husband Miles, take over the photography business. Melissa had begun to feel like doing photography was “becoming more of just a job”, whereas her involvement at Mundos never feels like work.

I love coming into work every day. I love checking up on the people, sharing stories, making them feel loved and making them feel welcomed.

– Melissa

Dan and Melissa are people of faith, and want the environment of Mundos to reflect Christ’s love without religion being a crushing force.

Sarah is the eldest daughter, and then came the boys, Adam, Jack, and Ben. Melissa describes as her three younger sons as being more introverted, but can’t emphasize enough how working in the Mundos family business has helped them grow and engage with people. At one time, the family lived in a two-bedroom, one-bath house. “We are a pretty tight-knit family. We have learned to be comfortable sharing, and our communication has improved greatly. Having a family business has been a huge blessing.”

Like any locals, the Clarks frequent their favorite spots. They have always loved to play Ultimate Frisbee at Grace McDonald park, and over time, has turned the family activity into a sort of community outing, with others joining in, sometimes multiple times a week. They spend their days in activity, basking in Northern Michigan’s outdoor playground. Sleeping Bear Dunes, Brown Bridge Pond Area, camping near the Platte River, or spending time anywhere near Lake Superior.

Mundos just opened a new location in Suttons Bay. This one is smaller, but with a similar feel to the Boon Street shop. One of their Traverse City customers owns the Suttons Bay building, and offered the idea of expanding. “The community is so helpful here. It’s community over competition. Everyone here is very tight and willing to share and help others to be successful.”
